A Pregnant Girl

I saw this painting at the Kamunga Art School, on the last day of my stay in Angola. The woman is clearly suffering. Newspaper fragments in the upper left corner of the picture hint at what is going on in the painting, and this is my motivation for buying art––when the picture contains a mystery. I thus decided to buy it without hesitation. But what is the solution to the riddle? Malamba, who works at this art school, made a translation from Portuguese: “More than 60 minors that were sexually abused by teachers in various provinces of the country are pregnant.” The artist, Alb Teca, who teaches children painting in this cultural center, decided to bring attention to this problem through the language of art.

The money I paid for this work will go to children, to his students. May they grow up healthy!
